Well last Saturday was the night that all our hard work led up to. We had been planning this event since we arrived, nearly three months ago. Our primary goal? Raising money for the Timmins Food Bank. Our means? A benefit concert at Christopher’s Coffee, the local café. I’m glad to say it was a success!
We spent Saturday afternoon picking up equipment, preparing the set, perfecting the schedule, picking out prizes and figuring out minor details. We also picked up our newly acquired DJ, Sammy. By the time 7:30 rolled around, Christopher’s was filling up and most of our musicians had arrived. The night started off with local guitarist Brandon Cormier. Besides from a few technical glitches, he played a great set. Afterwards we announced our prize system and asked for donations.
Next came radio DJ and musician-on-the-side Andy Cole who really go the crowd into it. Near the end of Andy’s set we were starting to get anxious. Pianist Chantal Delorme had yet to show up and we had no one to fill the next slot. Thankfully, Andrey had it covered. He told Sammy to put on something upbeat, and after a short introduction he launched into a flawless break dance routine. From youths to the elderly, people went crazy! By that time Chantal had arrived, set up in no time and proceeded to win the crowd over with well known songs and an incredible voice. Next we did a prize draw. We gave away tons of gift certificates, a BBQ set, sports equipment, and a floating cooler.

Our last act of the night was Akoufen, an alternative rock band that decided to do an acoustic performance. Although unfortunately they didn’t get to play their full set due to time constraints, they were awesome, and ended the night on a great note.
Our advertising paid off, as the place was kept full all night. Thanks to that, a generous contribution from the city of Timmins and the girls diligence in collecting donations during the show, we raised almost fifteen hundred dollars! We will be handing that off along with the mountain of food we raised from going door-to-door, to the Food Bank sometime within the next two weeks!
Finally, thanks to the City of Timmins, Christopher’s Café, Ray Perrier Music, Metro, Stitches, all the musicians that performed and our good friend Sammy for all the help. None of this would be possible without the generous support we received from the community.
